Titan Wellness 1 HP Pro+ Chiller Review After Using in Houston Every Day for 8 Months – My Opinion
TITAN Wellness Review
I want to start this review by saying something obvious to anyone who has ever seen a cold plunge chiller review. Most of these reviews are written by people who live in California or the Pacific Northwest. People who experience summer temps rarely pushing above 85 degrees before dropping again at night. I live in Houston. A place where it is hot and humid from May until October. Where temperatures routinely hit the mid to upper 90s and the steering wheel of your car is not touchable until after noon. Where it does not get appreciably cooler at night in the garage. Where I did not find a single cold plunge chiller review before buying my own and setting up for daily use. Where after 8 months of using mine, I am writing this review for the kind of chiller I wish I had found earlier. Why I Stopped Using Bags of Ice and Started Shopping for a Cold Plunge Chiller For about a year before finding the Titan Wellness 1 HP Pro+ I was using a cooler and bags of ice to get in my daily cold plunge. My setup involved driving to the gas station or grocery store every 2 or 3 days, picking up anywhere from 40 to 60 pounds of ice (depending on how hot it was that day), bringing it all home, dumping it into a cooler, waiting 15 minutes for the water temp to come down, and then getting in. My ice would last maybe 2 sessions before it melted away completely in the Houston heat. Each session in the warmer temps of the summer would see the water temp start higher and end higher than the previous. Back to back plunges were out of the question in the warmer months. The cost of all that ice put me between $80 and $120 in ice every month depending on how often I was doing cold plunges. That added up to almost $1200 in yearly expenditures on something I only used maybe 50 times a year. And I had to spend that much time doing it all for every session I wanted to squeeze in. But those costs were nothing compared to the annoyance of it all. The inconsistency drove me nuts. Some days I’d get in nice and chilled and other days the ambient heat had robbed the bags of most of their cooling power by the time I got in. I never really knew what temperature I was getting in to. I could not set a strict protocol based on what happened every single day because every day was different. I started shopping for a cold plunge chiller after that. The Titan Wellness 1 HP Pro+ was my eventual winner, but let me tell you why I looked at everything else first. Why I Bought This Chiller – What Sets It Apart From The Rest When I was shopping around for a chiller, there were a few things I knew I needed. I needed something that could handle the heat of Houston. I wanted something with built in water filtration that would let me skip the hassle of maintaining my own water quality. And I needed something with an app controlled schedule that would let me get in my morning plunge no matter how busy I was. I had the Titan Wellness website open when I initially started looking, and I knew I had to get something in the Pro+ category the moment I saw the specifications. They even have a climate recommendation section on their site. The 1/3 HP Standard is recommended for below 85 degrees, the 1/2 HP Pro is recommended for above 85, and the 1 HP Pro+ is recommended for above 100 (or for more frequent or commercial use). My July garage temps regularly hit 95 on the low end and 105 on the high. The climate based specification recommendation is what got me to narrow it down to the 1 HP Pro+. I also knew I needed built in water quality maintenance, and the Titan Wellness 1 HP Pro+ has that in spades. It includes 20 micron continuous water filtration plus UV sanitation as standard equipment. Throw in a few cups of epsom salt with every water change and you can go 3 to 4 weeks between full water changes. Coming from a system of bags of ice where I needed to change the water every 2 or 3 I was blown away at how easy it was. I really can’t stress this enough. The water quality aspect of cold plunge ownership is a huge pain point for most people and Titan Wellness makes it easy. The final thing that sold me was the app controlled scheduling. I work a busy schedule and the idea that I could set my chiller to be a certain temperature by 6 am no matter how much time I had that day was very appealing to me. It is the feature that makes this a daily practice instead of a discretionary luxury for me. Between the cost of the ice and the hassle of it all, I really regretted every cold plunge session I skipped because I did not have the time or energy to do it. All of that is a long winded way of saying that the $1,190 1 HP Pro+ was a big purchase for me (I had the $0 finance option over 12 months from Titan Wellness), but the cold hard truth is that I paid for that chiller almost immediately after I bought it. I ran the math on the value of the ice I was buying every month and it did not take long at all before I realized that value was right there in the cost of the chiller. And the last reason I knew I was making the right investment decision was the 2 year warranty that can be extended to 5 years. It is hard to say no to something that comes with a warranty for that long, especially something as mechanical as a cold plunge chiller. Everything Else – Opening the Box, Setup, Noise Levels, Electricity Use, etc. The chiller itself was shipped to me from the Titan Wellness warehouse in California. It arrived in Houston after 4 business days with no issues. The box it arrived in was very secure and I am happy to report that the product inside was not damaged in transport. The 56 lb chiller is not light, but it is a very manageable size. I recommend having another person help you lift it in place if you can. In terms of the chiller itself, it looks substantially bulkier than the smaller models in the series. It has a footprint of 17.5 x 14.5 x 17 inches and while that is not unbendable, I would still recommend double checking the space where you are planning to set it up before purchasing. In my case, I set it up in my covered patio and I am very happy with where it is. I am not a mechanically inclined person. I have changed a few lights in my house and I have put together a few pieces of IKEA furniture, but that is about it. In that spirit, I know I am not the best judge of how complicated the setup is for a cold plunge chiller. I can say that it took me about 35 minutes to put the whole thing together. But keep in mind that I read the instructions 2 times before trying to put anything together. The chiller itself is simple. Find a place to set it up, attach the inlet and outlet water lines to the tub, attach the water lines to an appropriate water source, plug the power supply in to a 110 volt standard US socket, fill the tub with water, and turn it on. It was a very straightforward process. The hardest part was connecting the hoses to the inlet and outlet which I did not do until after I finished reading the whole manual. I called the customer service number listed on the chiller support page before I did anything else just to be sure. I think that is a good recommendation for anyone who is unfamiliar with the setup process. When I called, I was connected to a representative right away who walked me through the process of attaching the hoses. It only took about 4 minutes. I am very happy to report that the entire process of setting up my chiller was painless and not at all intimidating. Finally, the first morning after setup I turned the chiller on and by the next morning the water was already at 46 degrees. I stayed closer to 50 degrees for the first few weeks as I learned how the chiller worked. It does a great job of holding its temp (for me anyway) as long as the cover is on between sessions (which I recommend). How It Performed Over The Past 8 Months This is the important part. This is the part that short reviews on the internet cannot capture for you. I have used the 1 HP Pro+ in Houston every single day for the past 8 months and here is what I can tell you. Cooling Performance It does what it says it does. The cooling performance of the 1 HP is right in line with the specifications listed on the Titan Wellness website. It can cool 100 gallons of water from ambient temperature to your desired temperature in 1 to 2 hours. My tub has room for twice that much. It takes me 4 to 5 hours to cool from ambient temperature to 47 degrees (my personal preference) and it does a nice job of holding that temp through the night and the next day as well. If I leave the cover on in between sessions (which I recommend) you will not see a drastic change in temp. In the middle of August (the hottest it gets where I live), I had my patio temp at 103 degrees and my chiller was still happily holding 47. I would have expected to see some changes in my usual cooling performance. But no. The chiller handled the heat just fine. It is important that you understand how valuable that is to me. When I was shopping around, I saw so many reviews from people in more temperate climates who said their chiller handled the heat just fine over the summer. And for those people, it probably did. But when I read those reviews, I knew those people were never in Houston. And I knew I had to be very careful when shopping for a chiller because I could not rely on those reviews to tell me what I needed to know. I knew I needed something specifically suited to dealing with the heat. That is why the climate based specification recommendation from Titan Wellness was so important to me. I am really glad I chose the 1 HP Pro+ because it has proven itself to be the exact right size for my needs. In a perfect world, I would have gone with an even bigger chiller given the opportunity, but as it stands I think the 1 HP Pro+ is perfectly suited to my needs. The smaller units would have struggled in the heat of the Houston summer. I would not recommend them to anyone who lives in the south east or in the south west. Please keep that in mind when looking at the climate based recommendations listed on the Titan Wellness website. They are being completely honest with you. Water Quality I am surprised by this benefit. Coming from a background of cold plunges using bags of ice, water quality in a closed system like a cold plunge chiller is a huge benefit for me. I used to have to worry about changing the water every few days or adding chemicals to keep it from getting cloudy and gross. With the 20 micron continuous filtration and the epsom salt additions, I change my water every 3 weeks or so and it is surprisingly nice water to look at in a tub. I use the UV sanitation upgrade that I bought as part of my purchase of the 1 HP, and I have to say I really enjoy having the option to keep my water clean longer. Filtration is your biggest expense when it comes to cold plunge ownership (outside of the chiller itself of course). The filters come in a 4 pack for $39 from Titan Wellness. At the rate I go through them (every 3 weeks or so) this works out to about the same as the $80 to $120 per month I used to spend on ice. Noise Levels The chiller has a noise level of about 50 to 60 decibels, or about the same as a standard household air conditioner. I personally think that is very reasonable and a fair amount of credit goes to the fact that I use it on my patio. It is not unbearably loud inside the house when I am in the garage, but it is also not something I could hear when I was in my bedroom on the other side of the house. If you are considering an indoor installation with an adjacent bedroom I would suggest testing it out before investing in a more permanent solution. The chiller does not run constantly. It runs long enough to cool the water to your desired temperature, then it shuts off until it needs to cool again. It is fairly easy to tell when it is cooling because it makes more noise than usual, but it is also fairly easy to forget it is on when it is not actively cooling. That is the nice thing about the app controlled schedule. Electricity Usage The 1 HP Pro+ has an input wattage of 930W, and a compressor wattage of 895W according to the specification sheet. Again, the chiller does not run constantly. When it is running, it will put out about the same electricity cost as you see listed in the daily cost estimate on the Titan Wellness website. For me, plugging this in to my electricity bill means I see an increase in my power costs every month, but I did not track it before I installed the chiller since I had not had one previously. I do know the increase was not outrageous in the context of a hot climate in Houston where the chiller has to work hard to keep up with the ambient heat. It was right in the ball park of the $1.00 to $1.50 per day cost I expect to see on a daily basis. That brings me back around to the value of this chiller vs. the bags of ice. It really boils down to something I have mentioned a few times above, which is that I only used the ice baths maybe 50 times per year. The cost of that ice was still between $80 and $120 per month depending on the frequency of my use, but over the course of a year that still ends up being a very noticeable expense. The electricity cost of the chiller is substantially lower on an annual basis. Customer Service I called them twice. Once to ask about hose connections while I was installing the unit. And again about 3 months later when I heard a strange noise while the chiller was cycling through a cold plunge. They responded to the first call while I was still on the job site installing the chiller. I tell you that because I could not have done it without the help. The person I spoke to was very professional and helped walk me through connecting the hoses. It only took about 4 minutes to sort it all out. The second call was a similar situation. The person I spoke to was a bit more detail oriented and worked me through asking myself a few diagnostic questions to narrow down what the problem might be. He concluded it was a normal noise for the compressor to make in higher heats and I was very happy to hear that. The strange noise went away as it cooled down through the night and has not returned. The response quality was excellent on both calls. What I Like About This Product Climate specific engineering is huge to me. I cannot stress this enough when talking to people in similar hot climates. Titan did not just throw one size fits all at the problem. They were thoughtful enough to specify what climates each chiller model was recommended for. It was that detail that got me to choose the 1 HP Pro+ in the first place. I think that speaks volumes about their commitment to customer satisfaction. Water quality is a big benefit for the kind of closed system cold plunge I do. I did not realize it until I switched from bags of ice to this chiller, but it is a huge pain point for cold plunge ownership in general. I would say the water filtration and UV sanitation are both benefits that I genuinely underestimated. The app controlled scheduling is something I need to get in my daily habit. It is what makes cold plunge ownership possible for me on a daily basis. I set my chiller to start at 4am and it has the water at 46 degrees by 6am. That is the exact feature that makes this chiller a discretionary luxury for me instead of a burden. I do not have to think about getting in my cold plunge every day because it is always waiting for me. It transforms cold plunge ownership from something that requires will power into something that becomes a habit. That is a huge benefit to me. What To Know Before Buying This If you are considering a chiller that large, it is important to know that it will need to be placed somewhere with electrical service. It weighs 56 lbs and measures 17.5 x 14.5 x 17 inches so make sure you have the space before ordering. You will need to dedicate some time to maintenance and water changes. It is not that bad. But if you do not have the time to dedicate to keeping your chiller in good working order, it will not serve you well. Water changes. The water will need to be changed on a regular schedule. Every 3 to 4 weeks is the goal if you are making epsom salt additions and using the 20 micron continuous filtration. That may not seem like a lot, but it is important to plan accordingly if you want to stay ahead of the game. Who This Is For Athletes. Football players, crossfiters, and endurance athletes who are serious about their training and looking to recover faster between sessions. Anyone who is consistently sore and looking to cut down on the recovery time between intense workouts. People in hot climates. People in the south east or the south western US who have already tried lower power cold plunge systems and found them inadequate for their needs. If you are serious about cold therapy but you live in a place where it is frequently hot and humid, you need something in the Pro+ category. The Standard, while nice, is really not made for that kind of climate. People who want to build a daily cold plunge habit but do not know how to make the habit stick. If that sounds like you, the app controlled scheduling on this chiller is the perfect tool for the job. I have talked about how much I need that kind of discipline, but let me tell you the truth is that the app controlled schedules are not a novelty. They are genuinely necessary for building that cold plunge habit. Who This Is Not For People who only want to do a cold plunge once in a while. People who only want to use a cold plunge chiller once or twice per week should be looking at the Standard chiller (or even just bags of ice). The 1 HP is just too big and too expensive for lower frequency cold plunge use. The 1/3 HP Standard has been engineered for climates that rarely push over 85 degrees and will be perfectly fine for occasional cold plunge use at a much lower price point. People in the Pacific Northwest or northern states. If you have already ruled out hot climates, this chiller is not the right fit for you either. The climate specific engineering I have been so effusive about speaks both ways. If you are in the Pacific Northwest or in the northern states, you should be looking at the Standard or the Pro. Would I Buy It Again? As this has been a long purchase funnel, here is the answer to the question I asked myself going in: would this system keep the water cold enough in the middle of the Houston summer to be worth it? As this is the question that I've been asking myself for the last eight months, the first few weeks of ownership answered that one pretty succinctly Yes, it does. Eight months into ownership, the changes in my lifestyle that have come as a result of the purchase are ones I'm genuinely happy to see. The recovery time between workouts has improved, and I'm noticing a drastic difference in my sleep on days that I do a cold plunge versus days I skip. Wakes up in the morning feeling refreshed after a plunge is something I couldn't say during my ice bath days. While that is in no small part due to the chiller itself, it's the combination of all of the factors that go into making the cold therapy a regular occurrence in my life that contribute to these changes. The chiller is what facilitates that, but the benefits come from the discipline involved in using it regularly. Frequently Asked Questions The 1 HP Pro+ is it all hype? Does it actually do what they say in the Houston heat? Based on my personal tests keeping the water temps between 44 and 50 degrees throughout the summer, this machine held temps exactly where I put them during cooling cycles. Titan lists it as being able to operate in temperatures above 100 degrees, and I'm inclined to believe them based on my own tests. Moving on! Is it worth paying for the 1 HP over the 1/2 HP Pro? It depends on where you're located. Referencing the 1/2 HP Pro, the max recommended operating temp for that unit is 85 degrees. For the 1 HP Pro+, it's 100. The difference in power is noticeable when I'm running multiple sessions per day, especially in combination with the high ambient temps we usually get down here in Houston. I would recommend the 1 HP for anyone in Houston, Texas, Arizona, or really anywhere with hot summers. How hard is it to set up? I set mine up right out of the box, and it took me roughly 35 minutes to put it all together. No need to hire anyone to install it as there's no water line or electric hookups necessary. It runs on a standard 110V outlet, so anyone with basic home improvement knowledge could do it without a second thought. The Titan team was super helpful over the phone in case you need some assistance on the install, which is a really great option to have for when you're not sure what to do Does it get rid of the need to buy bags of ice? Absolutely! As soon as this thing was installed, the bags of ice stopped coming. The chiller does the job of keeping the water at a cold temp all on its own without any outside interference or help needed. How often does the water need to be changed? With the epsom salt and 20 micron filter in place, I find I only have to change the water every 3 weeks or so when following a daily cold plunge regiment. The water is perfectly fine with being used in the next session so long as it's been properly sanitized with the epsom salt and filtered. This is one of the reasons why I get so much use out of my water between changes- combined with the uv sanitation upgrade. How loud is it? Based on the specs Titan lists on their site, the 1 HP Pro+ falls between 50-60 decibels of noise output while the unit is running. Based on my tests on a covered patio, it's definitley audible once you get right next to it, but once you're back inside your house with a closed door between you and the patio, you won't hear it at all. If you're considering a cold plunge system for your home, this would be ideal if you're worried about noise pollution. Can it be used outside? It has been! I have mine set up on a covered patio, and Titan recommends that you keep the unit in a shady area rather than direct sunlight for both your and the unit's safety. Having it outside takes some of the pressure off the unit as it doesn't have to work as hard to cool the water, which helps prolong its lifespan. It's also much more enjoyable to dip into a cold plunge that's outside rather than in your house. Why the bigger chiller? Why not one of the smaller ones? Again, it's the climate. As mentioned before, Titan recommends their smaller chillers for more temperate climates, and while those would work fine for my needs, they don't really do what I need them to do in a climate like Houston's. Summer temps frequently get up towards and past 90 degrees with a lot of days hitting 100, which puts us near and past the recommended operating temps for the smaller chillers. Final Thoughts Eight months ago, I was lugging around bags of ice trying to throw them in my cold tub at the end of every session. Today, I set my chiller from my phone and wake up every morning at 6 AM to jump in 46 degree water. It's a pretty minor change, really, on the surface, but I would trade a hundred bags of ice for the convenience and consistency of being able to jump in nice and cold water any time I want. If you're looking into any of Titan Wellness's cold plunge systems and you live in an area with notably hot summers, pay attention to the climate recommendations Titan lists for their units. That bit of info is the most useful bit of info they list, really, and should be taken into consideration first and foremost by anyone looking into buying one of their products. If you're in an area as hot as Houston, then the 1 HP Pro+ is definitley the way to go.
